A scar is inevitable result of skin injury. Scar formation in the location of the injury is a natural biological process of the healing of tissue. To heal a wound our body synthesizes new collagen fibers thus forming scar tissue which has a different structure than the surrounding skin. Scars can form after surgical manipulations, traumas, skin diseases and pathological conditions (for example, acne).

There are different types of scars. Normally scars are smooth, light and practically invisible. Concerns cause protruding scars which develop if our body produces too much collagen. Such scars are called hypertrophic or keloid scars. Sometimes scars can be "sunken", "indrawn", forming tiny pits in the skin. They are called hypotrophic or atrophic scars.

When to start the treatment of scars?
The sooner you consult with a specialist about the possible treatment of a scar the sooner and better will be the result. It is important to realize that a scar cannot be completely removed, however, a very good cosmetic effect can be achieved if the treatment and correction of a scar are started in due time.

There is no unified algorithm for the treatment and correction of scars. Each case is considered separately and the method of therapy is chosen depending on the location of a scar, as well as its type, form, depth and age.

Surgical excision of a scar
Surgical excision of a scar will not destroy it although this method can be used to smooth out the borders of  a scar thus making it less noticeable.

Steroid injections
To stimulate flattening of hypertrophic and keloid scars, steroids are injected into the scar tissue. Several injections are necessary to attain the desired result.

Treatment of a scar by laser
This method is more appropriate for the treatment of protruding scars. Different types of lasers are available at our clinic (Erbium, CO2, Fraxel) which are used to make the surface of the scar smoother and in level with the surrounding skin. The  new technologies allow choosing appropriate regime and the depth of the impact of laser beam to resurface the scar tissue.

Filler injections
Indrawn, sunken scars can be corrected with the help of fillers. As they are products made from hyaluronic acid, their effect lasts for a certain time (at an average for 1.5 years). Thus the injections have to be repeated to retain the desired effect. This method allows raising a scar until the level of the surrounding healthy skin and to achieve a good cosmetic result.
The clinic also offers other methods (intense pulse light, chemical peelings, medical - cosmetic procedures) which in combination with different therapies enable to improve the appearance of a scar and make it unnoticeable.
